The Gympie council in Southern Queensland plans to increase funding for green initiatives in this years budget. With a $5 rise in the environment levy to $35, the Gympie council aims to increase the environmental budget by more than $300,000 to $855,000. The council now plans to work with environmental groups to determine the best way to allocate the funds.

Also included in the budget was a record low rate rise for residents, dropping from 2.67% to 0.15% after an early payment discount. $6 million has also been allocated for a new aquatic and recreation centre, due to open by December next year.

The Gympie council budget has drawn criticism from former councillor and mayoral candidate Graham Engeman was believes there needed to be rate cuts or freezes included. “There is no point beautifying the region if people have got no money. The poor are not being considered." says Mr Engeman.
